Drömlandet Is Under Construction
Right now, we are building the largest exhibition in the history of the National Museum of Science and Technology. Here you can read about what is happening in Maskinhallen, how long the construction will last, and what you can experience during this time.
What’s happening in Maskinhallen right now?
At the moment, we are building a completely new exhibition in Maskinhallen. This means that parts of the space will be closed for a period of time – but the rest of the museum remains open as usual, with plenty to explore.
How long will the construction last?
Construction will take place from 1 December 2025 until April 2026. During this time, the rest of the museum’s exhibitions, programs, and Wisdome Stockholm will remain open as usual. For the latest information ahead of your visit, please check tekniskamuseet.se.
What is being built in Maskinhallen?
We are building our next exhibition, Drömlandet, which explores how technology, vision, and belief in the future shaped Sweden. It is our largest exhibition investment ever and spans more than 150 years of technological history. To understand Sweden, we must understand how technology, innovation, and dreams of a better future have shaped our society. In Drömlandet, we tell the story of how a small, poor country on the outskirts of Europe became one of the world’s most innovative societies—where ideas and inventions not only transformed Sweden, but also left their mark on global technological development. It offers a viewpoint that provides an overview of history while also allowing us to glimpse the future. A spatial and interactive narrative, a breathtaking visual experience that fills Maskinhallen.
We don’t want to reveal too much just yet and are saving some surprises—but you can expect technology, history, visions, and big dreams.
When does Drömlandet open?
Drömlandet opens on 1 May.
Will construction be ongoing throughout the entire period?
Yes. When we rebuild an exhibition, parts of the museum are affected throughout the entire period. However, 10 other exhibitions remain open as usual. Below are some dates when construction activity will be particularly intensive:
22 January
The Mine and Teknoleket is closed due to renovations. It will reopen as usual on 23 January.
20 December – April
During this period, visitors will need to pass through a designated corridor in the Machine Hall to reach the Wood Hall, Wisdome Stockholm, Skogen, and Mega Mind. It will also be possible to access these exhibitions via our inner courtyard, where a ramp has been constructed to make it easier for visitors.
7 January – April
We will be moving our much-loved Model Railway to Teknoleket. This work begins on 7 January and will be completed in mid-April. During this period, the Model Railway will unfortunately not be accessible.
7 January – 21 January
During this period, parts of the Mine will be closed as we relocate our Bessemer converter. A Bessemer converter is a large, tilting, pear-shaped steel vessel used in the Bessemer process to mass-produce steel from molten pig iron by blowing air through the metal to oxidize impurities such as carbon, silicon, and manganese. This process was revolutionary during the Industrial Revolution and made cheaper and faster steel production possible for railways and skyscrapers.
12 January – 18 January
The Mine is completely closed to visitors due to the relocation mentioned above.
22 January
The Mine will reopen in its entirety.
7 January – April
Parts of Teknoleket will be closed as we build a brand-new train room. This will not affect the entire Teknoleket exhibition, and half of the exhibition will remain open as usual.
