Tekniska in Tensta – A new site for the maths of the future

Sweden is facing major challenges – but also major opportunities. With the new branch site in Tensta, Tekniska Museet aims to increase young people’s interest in mathematics and bolster the supply of the skills that will be needed in the future. Here we have curated a creative and accessible learning environment where maths gains new forms of expression – as games, building, coding and problem-solving.

Where maths becomes truly meaningful

With our branch site in Tensta, we at Tekniska Museet aim to break away from previous convention. We are the first national museum to open permanent premises outside of the city centre, which represents both a concrete and a symbolic investment in accessibility, local grounding and long-term commitment.

We have curated a learning environment where mathematics intersects with creativity, technology and teamwork. We host activities every day – from school programmes to games clubs and building labs – to stimulate curiosity, self-confidence and faith in the future.

Our work in Tensta builds upon a salutogenic approach and SOC – a sense of coherence. We want young people to feel that knowledge is meaningful, understandable and manageable.

The government’s STEM strategy for 2025 identifies science centres as key actors. Tekniska Museet is playing its part – not only as a complement to the classroom but by creating new paths that lead to knowledge. Together with our partners and local actors, we are building a forum where mathematics becomes a future interest, a community and a road to the future. The whole enterprise has been adapted to be suitable for young people aged 7 to 19, and has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Gålöstiftelsen and the City of Stockholm, and Tekniska Museet’s principal partners Ericsson and Saab.

About Campus Tensta

Pilparken, just to the north of Tensta Centrum, is a place that stands out stylistically from the surrounding residential area. It was here that Tensta Gymnasium was built in the early 1980s – one of the most expensive gymnasium schools of its time. Around the same time, a sports hall was built, as well as a community centre with a large concert hall named Stockholmssalen. Following a period of very limited activity over much of the past 15 years, the ambition of the new owners Hemsö is for the area to once again be a place that serves the residents of Tensta (which is one of Sweden’s most densely populated areas) and a hub for education, self-realisation, art, culture, science, celebration and everyday use.

Campus Tensta includes the following organisations: Järva Gymnasium, Tekniska Museet, Tensta Konsthall, Tensta Träff, Läsfrämjarinstitutet, Studiefrämjandet.
