The Model Railway

The model railway from the beginning of the 1950s has been upgraded and placed in a central spot of the museum.

Uno Milton’s model railway was set up at the beginning of the 1960s at the National Museum of Science and Technology. Work began in 1948 and it took 3,500 man-hours over seven years to complete it. All the parts are made by hand, with the exception of the locomotive’s motor, which was purchased ready-built.

There are a total of four different train sets, drawn by electric engines of type D, Da, Ra and F. The locomotives and carriages, which are made to a scale of 1:87 are exact copies from reality. The trains are driven by 12 V DC and, just like in reality, the overhead line is one pole and the rails the other.

The landscape is made of chicken wire, plaster of Paris, fur fabric and sawdust. To give the landscape depth, the foreground areas are painted in bright colours and the background areas painted in muted poster colours.

Demonstration Mon-Fri 11am & 2pm, Sat-Sun 12 & 3pm.
